Rise of Conservative Gen-Z Men
- 59% of Gen-Z men believe they are expected to do too much to support equality.
- Gen-Z men hold conflicting views towards independent and career oriented women.
- Open conversations around gender roles and masculinity can tackle their defensiveness.
While it has taken decades for feminism to break the traditional perspective around the roles of men and women, a recent study by Ipsos in the UK and the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s Business School, King’s College London proposed that Gen-Z is receding in the opposite direction.
Gen–Z has often been credited with the reputation of being the most “woke”, and a politically and socially aware generation. However, the survey reveals stark differences between different generations of men when it comes to gender roles.
What Do Gen-Z Men Think About Gender Roles?
According to the survey, 31% of Gen–Z men hold the view that a wife should always obey her husband, while about one-third of men believe husbands should have the final say in major household decisions. Nearly a quarter (24%) of Gen-Z men agree that a woman should not appear too independent or self-sufficient.
These attitudes not only exist for gender related roles but also toward sexual norms. 21% of Gen-Z men think a “real woman” should never initiate sex. Not only this,Gen-Z men want to get away with the responsibility of establishing equality, as 59% of them believe that men are expected to do too much to support equality.
Gen-Z men show a conservative attitude and a duality in their opinions. They are most likely to agree that women who have a successful career are more attractive to men, but simultaneously support the idea that a wife should always obey her husband and that a woman should never appear too self-sufficient or independent. This coexistence of modern and traditional beliefs echoes simple conservatism and reflects a generation negotiating rapid social change.
What is Bringing Conservatism Back?
This dichotomy is a testament to the cognitive dissonance experienced under social change. Gen-Z finds itself at a transitional stage of thinking, where social change is happening faster than identity adaptation. However, this conservative gender attitude urges us to delve deeper into the cultural, social, and economic factors that influence these beliefs. These attitudes can be attributed to the economic instability in the world, the rapidly changing social reality along with a generation dealing with loneliness. While struggling through this challenging reality, Gen-Z men are resorting to traditional male roles.
In order to overcome this precarious masculinity, they not only appear to feel intense pressure to conform to rigid masculine ideals, but in some cases seem to expect women to retreat to more traditional ways of being. Consequently, Gen-Z men are putting limiting expectations on women, as well as trapping themselves within restrictive gender norms.
A huge part of this generation’s identity is derived from algorithmic driven influences For a lot of men who struggle to find their feet while dealing with real world challenges, the “manosphere” becomes their haven. This is a loosely connected ecosystem of YouTube channels, Reddit forums, and TikTok accounts where a combative vision of masculinity is taking root. A space where anti-woke, anti-feminist, and pro-tradition messages dominate, fuels the mindset of young men. While the demand of current social reality is to carve an identity for oneself, Gen-Z men are moving towards traditionally defined roles.
What is the Impact on Gender Dynamics?
This polarity of attitudes within the generation is certainly reshaping gender dynamics. While many young women are becoming more inclusive towards their views on equality, bodily autonomy, identity, and social justice, a section of young men appears to be moving toward more traditional or defensive positions on gender roles. The growing ideological gap between young men and women is bound to create tension in relationships, workplaces, and educational spaces, where expectations about equality, independence, and partnership may differ significantly.
